I recently finished composing the original score to YOU HAVE ARRIVED, a disturbing horror short film by writer/actor/director Justin Phillip. I had the pleasure of meeting Justin on BEYOND DOUBT, a project I scored last year. Justin played a police officer who had been cleared in a controversial shooting, then was brought to testify against a fellow officer in court. We was great, and in the course of the promotion of that film we got to know one another. When Justin came to me with YOU HAVE ARRIVED, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. It delves into the creepy undercurrent of technology, and how people find themselves completely dependent upon it, rather than trusting their own eyes and judgement. This short is the concept for a full feature film, expected to go into production in 2017.

I recently worked with Lee Dreyfuss on his comedy short film, MINNOW POND. Minnow Pond is a parody of the popular series “Shark Tank”, and working with Lee was an opportunity to score some comedy music, but also some fun takes on reality television in general. I’ve known Lee for awhile now, however this was the first time we’d worked together- as a writer/director he’s got great instincts. This is also his first appearance as an actor onscreen! Here is a fun, overly cheesy track from the short:
I’ve been asked to score the upcoming project THE LAST SPARROW, a fairy tale type film set in China in the late 50s. It’s a beautifully shot film, fairly long for a short, about 18 minutes. The project is produced by Curt Chatham and directed by Luke Fischer and Ada Wong as part of the Liberty Lab for Film, a mentorship program that connects young filmmakers with established producers, writers, directors and television showrunners in Hollywood.
I’m very happy to announce that THIS LAST LONELY PLACE will be in limited theaters this Friday, August 12th. A fill nationwide VOD release will happen in early September. If you are in Los Angeles, you can watch the film this Friday at the Laemmlee’s Santa Monica theater. You can purchase tickets here: http://www.laemmle.com/films/41003
BEYOND DOUBT is the short film that is the “Little Engine That Could”. Following a string of performances in multiple prestigious film festivals, and winning numerous awards (including Best Cinematography), BEYOND DOUBT is now an official selection of the Santa Monica International Film Festival. This is a great festival, and an amazing opportunity to see this film on a BIG screen in a classic theater in Los Angeles. Scheduled to take place on Saturday July 23, 2016 at the Aero theatre in Santa Monica, the Santa Monica International Film Festival is fantastic bastion for sharing Independent films to the wider community. If anyone anyone curious who hasn’t yet seen the project on the big screen of a commercial theatre, this is certainly the festival to consider. Tickets can be purchased here: http://www.smff.org/#!tickets/c9tr Looking forward to seeing this film again on July 23rd!

Proud to announce that I will be scoring JR Hepburn’s action short film KILLING KHAN. Killing Khan, is at its heart, a revenge story. When several undercover agents are killed by the international terrorist Khan, their remaining sister goes on a warpath to avenge them and finish him once and for all. KILLING KHAN was produced by JR Hepburn and Andrew Adler, and shot over the winter in the Boston area. Excited to bring a musical vision to this action project and to work with this talented new director.
Director and writer Matthew Hermosillo introducing his film Beyond Doubt at the cast and crew screening. The screening took place at Phantom Carriage Brewery, one of the film’s shoot locations. Although Beyond Doubt is Writer/Director Matthew Hermosillo’s first film, it falls nothing short of perfection. The film is a wonderful courtroom drama piece that revolves around the shooting of a questionable officer. The film is led by Brent Antonello, known for his roles in One Fine Sunday and VH1’s Hit The Floor, along with a great supporting cast, including Justin Phillip (from The Brittany Murphy Story), Tanya Alexander (Material Girls), and Emmy winner Jeff Branson (The Guiding Light). Produced by Jon Brewer and Gary Bryman, Greg Cotten as Director of Photography, edited by Sam Perkins, and an original score by Jonathan Hartman. Beyond Doubt starts hitting the film festival circuits in February
I recently had the pleasure of working with director Matt Hermosillo on his short film BEYOND DOUBT. It’s a beautifully shot, gripping legal thriller about two police officers at odds with one another, and the aftermath of a shooting. The film is now complete and there will be a screening party this Thursday, January 28th at Phantom Carriage in Carson, CA. If you live in Los Angeles, I encourage you to attend- it will be a fun night. A great short film, craft beer, and talented filmmakers. This will be the first public performance of my score, which featured an incredible string quartet comprised of members of the LA Philharmonic.
I’ve been deep in prep for pilot season 2016! Working on a number of projects, which will be discussed in depth in the near future. Right now I’ve been composing concept pieces for two television pilots this spring, working with the show creators and producers to start defining possible sonic identities for these shows. A lot of fun collaborating with writers to find the sound that helps tell their story. Currently working on some World War Two material, as well as some adventure oriented music. More to come soon….
Welcome again to JonathanHartman.net, the newly re-launched website for Jonathan Hartman, composer for Film & Television. In addition to the projects window, which includes many of the projects Jonathan has worked on, there is a new Music Reel page being created, with streaming audio from his Soundcloud playlists page included here for your convenience. As always, this material represents a small fraction of the music at his studio, much of which is project sensitive, or covered by the film’s copyright for sharing online. For Producers and Directors, that material can be provided privately. just contact us!
October 21, 2015 This is the beginning of my new website. For those who have followed, this is the 3rd version of JonathanHartman.net. The decision was driven by a need for a more robust blog feature, as well as the ability to showcase projects in a more cohesive way, with video and soundtrack playlists incorporated together with project information. Something the former site lacked, and was awkward at handling. I have a lot of incredible projects coming up, and thought it best to update the site before we were too deep into composing nonstop! Plenty of updates to come throughout the fall. 2016 looks very promising, with 3 pilots, a possible series, and 3 feature films already on the calendar. So bear with us as we update the site and get it fully functional!
This Last Lonely Place, now available on demand online Nov 10, 2104 THIS LAST LONLY PLACE is now available to watch via streaming and non-DRM download! I recently scored This Last Lonely Place, starring Rhys Coiro, Xander Berkeley, & Carly Pope. You can watch the film at: http://www.thislastlonelyplace.com Leonard Martin describes This Last Last Lonely Place as “A taut, surprising, compelling film noir. Well-acted and extremely well shot on the streets of Los Angeles at night. I thoroughly enjoyed it!” Directed by Steve Anderson and produced by Industry Standard films and Humphrey Bogart’s revitalized Santana Films. It was a real pleasure to score this film and I’m glad everyone can now have an opportunity to see it! Jonathan’s latest film, ”This Last Lonely Place” (2014), features lush orchestral melodies, jazz, as well as distorted textures and guitars. A crime drama, the film is about a down on his luck cab driver (Rhys Coiro) that has picked up a desperate man & his mistress, running from a murder. As the night spirals out of the driver’s control, it’s unclear who will make it out alive. “The film presented so many wonderful opportunities to explore musical texture and color”, says Jonathan. “There were so[…]
The Humphrey Bogart Estate’s production company will offer fans the chance to see it early Sep 22, 2014 Fans of Humphrey Bogart-style noir will soon have a few ways to get their movie fix. Santana Films is releasing This Last Lonely Place via Indiegogo for fans wanting to see it early — and then will make it available online for streaming or download at www.thislastlonelyplace.com via VHX, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively. Santana Films, which is run by Bogart’s estate and filmmaker Steve Anderson, is making their film available DRM-free beginning Oct. 28 after the Indiegogo campaign concludes. Anderson, who directed This Last Lonely Place, is calling it an opportunity to link Bogart’s old-world sensibility with new-world distribution opportunities. “We’re excited. It just feels like the right thing to do,” said Anderson. “This film was born from a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, and now we will use Indiegogo in a new way — as a release platform —to bring the film directly to our audience, forgoing the traditional film festival route.” The film, which stars Rhys Coiro (Entourage), Xander Berkeley (24), and Carly Pope (Elysium), was shot in Los Angeles, California. It centers on a cab driver who unwittingly gets involved in helping an investment banker cover up a crime. “We’ve had opportunities and[…]

Nov 25, 2013 Our Proof of Concept Star Wars piece, “The Apprentice” was featured today on a number of websites. First it showed up on Kotaku. Very cool! Then by mid morning, it was noticed by the Washington Post. The head of Lucasfilm was very kind towards us and this project, and had no issues with sharing it with the world, as long as we included a disclaimer on this. While never created as a pitch for a specific film, it was a proof of concept, showing the Lucasfilm people our team’s abilities, and love of the Star Wars world.
Nov 13, 2013 Star Wars, The Apprentice I recently had the opportunity to work with director/editor Todd Sandler on an amazing Star Wars proof of Concept. You can view this in the Video section of my website!
