Jonathan recently spent 17 days at the legendary ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS in London, England mixing his latest original score for Games Workshop. Utilizing Abbey Road’s immense collection of classic analog gear, Jonathan has crafted a cutting edge musical score that simultaneously lives as a futuristic score but delivered with the retro sonic production sensibility of an album that could have been released in the late 70s or early 80s. A massive undertaking, this new score featured vocalists, guitars, dozens of exotic percussion instruments and live string recordings that were tracked in Los Angeles at THE VILLAGE, Fleetwood Mac’s studio facility. We’re excited to reveal more in the coming months as the project works its way through post production to its release date! More to come…. soon.
The latest episode of HAMMER & BOLTER, my Warhammer anthology series on WARHAMMER + has been released! This episode is particularly fun as it features three aspirants on epic quests to join the Space Wolves marine chapter as recruits. When I composed the original score for this episode I had to bring in much of the analog synth sound of the Warhammer 40k feel, but pair with rigorous wild elements for the Space Wolves. I purchased and quickly learned how to play a nordic Taglharpa, which I recorded extensively in the episode, along with Celtic frame drums, Goat and Ram’s horns, and vocals. I enlisted a small cadre of talented singers to record what I affectionally referred to as a “viking shout choir” Because we were in the midst of the worst of Covid, we decided to record them individually under strict audio Covid protocols, and then layered their performances to provide the sound of large choir comprised of dozens of men. All of the action sequences feature multitrack singers to give that wild, out of control and truly lethal sound of the Space Wolves home planet of Fenris! You can watch this episode along with all of the episodes[…]
The latest episode of my series Hammer & Bolter is now available on Warhammer Plus! GARDEN OF GHOSTS explores a powerful story of an Aeldari Warlock revisiting his original Craftworld in the aftermath of an incredible conflict. He’s on a specific quest, one that will blur the lines of the present and the past, and force him to deal with the tragedy of war in order to find a path forward. In many ways this was one of the most emotional and poignant of all the scores Ive composed for Hammer & Bolter. it’s such an intensely personal story with this character and his journey. I love that this episode shows another side to the Warhammer universe, and delves into the cost of war in truly unique ways. We also get to see the amazing Aeldari Striking Scorpions and how truly lethal and fast they are! Along with vocals, this episode features extensive percussion, especially frame drums, as well as unique instruments like the Persian Kemenche. This episode featured Monique Donnelly, and incredible female vocalist that has me in awe every time she sings. This episode features the first ever song written and sung in Aeldari! Working closely with Games[…]

The latest episode of Hammer & Bolter has been released: BOUND FOR GREATNESS. This was a truly fun and unusual episode to score. In BOUND FOR GREATNESS, we follow the daily life of Adepth Neath, who works in a vast Librarium and is tasked with counting books. Every day, endlessly without end. But deep within this library there are terrible secrets and temptations, things that could utterly condemn someone… In scoring this episode I featured some extensive solo cello recording, which provided some gravitas for the depth of the plot and the danger that was risked. It also provided an opportunity for me to explore some unique aleatoric composing techniques with this string instrument, particularly throughout much of the horror oriented and scarier sequences SPOILER ALERT! Because of the nature of the Chaos corruption of the librarian, I decided to explore using avian sounds. So went and recorded a number of birds, as well as obtained some recordings of North American loons, which I then programmed and manipulated throughout every scene within the episode. So the influence of Chaos was always there, even if it didn’t sonically register at first. For example, I time stretched the bird sound 5000% percent[…]
Games Workshop’s new service WARHAMMER PLUS has officially launched! Im incredibly happy to finally announce my latest television projects and my original scores for both ANGELS OF DEATH, as well as the Warhammer anthology series HAMMER & BOLTER. DEATHS HAND was the first episode that I scored for Hammer & Bolter, and in many ways it set the tone for the series as a whole. Dark, mysterious, sometimes unsettled, paired with great action sequences! The inaugural episode features a unique tale of an Inquisitor who is obsessed with the Imperial Tarot in an attempt to see the future, and he doesn’t like the results he keeps receiving. Can a man cheat death? Can he change the likely future? When an old friend arrives he finds himself facing uncertainty- who’s dangerous? who isn’t? what is the threat that he can’t see or even anticipate? This episode has fantastic twists and turns set against the backdrop of an evocative atmospheric setting. It was immensely fun to score this one! On a related side note, all of the amazing artwork shown in this episode was based off of a limited set of cards that the great John Blanche had illustrated years ago. I[…]

WARHAMMER IDENT I scored the company and media production logo “Ident” for Games Workshop’s massive WARHAMMER gaming and science fiction brand. Games Workshop, is a British manufacturer of miniature wargames, based in Nottingham, England. They are a billion dollar market valued company, as well as a top performing member of the FTSE250 index. As a global science fiction and fantasy brand, they have millions of dedicated, passionate fans. I’m one of them. In fact, I’ve been a lifelong fan all things WARHAMMER: their games, their miniatures, their novels, and their incredible world building. Over the years, I’ve become friends with many of the creative geniuses at Games Workshop: sculptors, painters, designers, authors. So it was an incredible honor when Games Workshop asked me to score their new company logo, to be the SOUND of their public identity. This was a massive undertaking, with creative and technical challenges. On the creative side, there was the daunting task of tackling the question of ‘What Is Warhammer?’, as well as the long history of the brand, and trying to distil that into a clear, concise essence. A single musical gesture of just 16 seconds that encapsulates all of it. 40 years of Games[…]
