Jonathan Hartman

Television

Abbey Road Studios, July 2021

Jonathan recently spent 17 days at the legendary ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS in London, England mixing his latest original score for Games Workshop. Utilizing Abbey Road’s immense collection of classic analog gear, Jonathan has crafted a cutting edge musical score that simultaneously lives as a futuristic score but delivered with the retro sonic production sensibility of an album that could have been released in the late 70s or early 80s. A massive undertaking, this new score featured vocalists, guitars, dozens of exotic percussion instruments and live string recordings that were tracked in Los Angeles at THE VILLAGE, Fleetwood Mac’s studio facility. We’re excited to reveal more in the coming months as the project works its way through post production to its release date! More to come…. soon.

Warhammer Plus: FANGS (Hammer & Bolter)

The latest episode of HAMMER & BOLTER, my Warhammer anthology series on WARHAMMER + has been released! This episode is particularly fun as it features three aspirants on epic quests to join the Space Wolves marine chapter as recruits. When I composed the original score for this episode I had to bring in much of the analog synth sound of the Warhammer 40k feel, but pair with rigorous wild elements for the Space Wolves. I purchased and quickly learned how to play a nordic Taglharpa, which I recorded extensively in the episode, along with Celtic frame drums, Goat and Ram’s horns, and vocals. I enlisted a small cadre of talented singers to record what I affectionally referred to as a “viking shout choir” Because we were in the midst of the worst of Covid, we decided to record them individually under strict audio Covid protocols, and then layered their performances to provide the sound of large choir comprised of dozens of men. All of the action sequences feature multitrack singers to give that wild, out of control and truly lethal sound of the Space Wolves home planet of Fenris! You can watch this episode along with all of the episodes[…]

Warhammer Plus: GARDEN OF GHOSTS (Hammer & Bolter)

The latest episode of my series Hammer & Bolter is now available on Warhammer Plus! GARDEN OF GHOSTS explores a powerful story of an Aeldari Warlock revisiting his original Craftworld in the aftermath of an incredible conflict. He’s on a specific quest, one that will blur the lines of the present and the past, and force him to deal with the tragedy of war in order to find a path forward. In many ways this was one of the most emotional and poignant of all the scores Ive composed for Hammer & Bolter. it’s such an intensely personal story with this character and his journey. I love that this episode shows another side to the Warhammer universe, and delves into the cost of war in truly unique ways. We also get to see the amazing Aeldari Striking Scorpions and how truly lethal and fast they are! Along with vocals, this episode features extensive percussion, especially frame drums, as well as unique instruments like the Persian Kemenche. This episode featured Monique Donnelly, and incredible female vocalist that has me in awe every time she sings. This episode features the first ever song written and sung in Aeldari! Working closely with Games[…]

Warhammer Plus: BOUND FOR GREATNESS (Hammer & Bolter)

The latest episode of Hammer & Bolter has been released: BOUND FOR GREATNESS. This was a truly fun and unusual episode to score. In BOUND FOR GREATNESS, we follow the daily life of Adepth Neath, who works in a vast Librarium and is tasked with counting books. Every day, endlessly without end. But deep within this library there are terrible secrets and temptations, things that could utterly condemn someone… In scoring this episode I featured some extensive solo cello recording, which provided some gravitas for the depth of the plot and the danger that was risked. It also provided an opportunity for me to explore some unique aleatoric composing techniques with this string instrument, particularly throughout much of the horror oriented and scarier sequences SPOILER ALERT! Because of the nature of the Chaos corruption of the librarian, I decided to explore using avian sounds. So went and recorded a number of birds, as well as obtained some recordings of North American loons, which I then programmed and manipulated throughout every scene within the episode. So the influence of Chaos was always there, even if it didn’t sonically register at first. For example, I time stretched the bird sound 5000% percent[…]

Warhammer Plus: DEATHS HAND (Hammer & Bolter)

Games Workshop’s new service WARHAMMER PLUS has officially launched! Im incredibly happy to finally announce my latest television projects and my original scores for both ANGELS OF DEATH, as well as the Warhammer anthology series HAMMER & BOLTER. DEATHS HAND was the first episode that I scored for Hammer & Bolter, and in many ways it set the tone for the series as a whole. Dark, mysterious, sometimes unsettled, paired with great action sequences! The inaugural episode features a unique tale of an Inquisitor who is obsessed with the Imperial Tarot in an attempt to see the future, and he doesn’t like the results he keeps receiving. Can a man cheat death? Can he change the likely future? When an old friend arrives he finds himself facing uncertainty- who’s dangerous? who isn’t? what is the threat that he can’t see or even anticipate? This episode has fantastic twists and turns set against the backdrop of an evocative atmospheric setting. It was immensely fun to score this one! On a related side note, all of the amazing artwork shown in this episode was based off of a limited set of cards that the great John Blanche had illustrated years ago. I[…]

DARK/WEB Release on Amazon

Happy to announce that my latest series DARK/WEB will be released on AMAZON PRIME on July 19th, 2019.  DARK/WEB is an exploration into the underbelly of the internet, the dark corners where things lurk.  It’s a unique series in a  lot ways, including that it’s both an anthology series as well as a narrative linear series.   It has an amazing main storyline with anthology segments that branch off, all intertwined and related to the main story. My original score features a large number of classic analogue synths, and is heavily influenced by classic John Carpenter films. “Dark/Web” was created by Michael and Tim Nardelli through their Felt Films company along with Mario Miscione, who teamed on the horror movie “Circle.” The series will be comprised of eight anthology segments, each dealing with the dangers of our totally connected world, tied together by a serialized narrative. The cast is pretty talented as the show stars “Sibongile Mlambo (‘Netflix’s Lost in Space‘), Nicholas Brendan (‘Buffy’), Clare Kramer (‘Buffy’), Robert Davi (‘The Goonies’), Lana McKissack (‘Transformers’), Michael Nardelli (‘Circle’), Noemi Gonzalez (‘Paranormal Activity’).” Hayley Marie Norman, Dora Madison, Griffin Freeman, Cole Bernstein, Duane Shepard Sr. and Amin El Gamal have boarded forthcoming anthology thriller “Dark/Web,” Variety has learned[…]

THE CHAPERONE- Official Trailer

Incredibly happy to announce the first trailer for THE CHAPERONE, starring Elizabeth McGovern and Haley Lu Richardson.    I had the unique pleasure and task of composing the original 1920s songs for this film.  Lots of ragtime, vaudeville, big bands…  Tremendous Fun!   I worked with Elizabeth McGovern, producer Victoria Hill and music supervisor Andy Ross for Michael Engler’s beautifully directed film.  Look for it in international release soon, on the BBC, and on PBS as a Masterpiece Film release.

Tale of Two Sisters: Review

We just received our first review of TALE OF TWO SISTERS and its great!  Steve Barton at Brainwaves has reviewed it- link included below.  Also very pleased to receive a shoutout re: my score, particularly right after Traci Lords fantastic performance. Cemetery Tales Presents: A Tale of Two Sisters (Movie Review) by Steve Barton, Sept 27, 2018 Starring Traci Lords, Bruce Davison, Michael Broderick, Ros Gentle, Monte Markham Directed by Chris Roe Movies and television. We obsessively engage in these media because they allow us a few moments to escape. To take part in an illusion of sorts as a means to distract us from the perils of reality. Our love affair with motion pictures began decades ago, and some of the earliest TV programs depicting thought-provoking genre-related content remain some of the very best examples of storytelling. Rod Serling’s “The Twilight Zone” will always have a home in many fans’ hearts as its storytelling and technique are every bit as powerful as they were when it premiered back in 1959. It’s cliche to say, “They just don’t make them like they used to,” but they just don’t… or do they? When it comes to Chris Roe’s directorial debut, Cemetery[…]

Cemetery Tales: A Tale of Two Sisters

I had the pleasure of working with Chris Roe years ago on my first feature  THE EMPLOYER.  A man of real style and substance, I was always impressed by him and his vision.  So when he approached me to score Cemetery Tales: A Tale of Two Sisters, and I jumped at the opportunity.   Black and white, with a  retro feel of the late 1940s inspired by Sunset Blvd, Hitchcock and classic Bernard Hermann film scores,  this was a rare chance to stretch my wings and compose something hauntingly beautiful.   We recorded a number of live players over two days of sessions, and will be posting a preview of the original score SOON.  The pilot premieres at the Stiges Film Festival this Fall.  Look for it on television soon……     Chris Roe (Bereave, The Employer), Writer/Director, Exec Producer.   Matt O’Neill, producer Starring Traci Lords (Excision, Blade), Bruce Davison ( Xmen, The Fosters), Michael Broderick (American Crime Story, NCIS),  Ros Gentle (American Crime Story) Set in 1949, a Hollywood star mourns the loss of her beloved sister on the one year anniversary of her death. When the truth of her murder is revealed, a surprise visitor returns. Time is running out. Will justice be served? Tick tock tick tock…

SUPERSTITION on NETFLIX!

The series centers on the Hastings family, owners of the only funeral home in the mysterious town of La Rochelle, Georgia. The family also acts as the keepers of the town’s dark secrets and history. Known for its haunted houses, elevated graveyards, odd townsfolk and rich history of unusual phenomena, the town is also a “landing patch” for the world’s darkest manifestations of fear, guided into the world by an ancient, mysterious malefactor. Starring Mario Van Peebles, Brad James, Robinne Lee, W Earl Brown, Demetria McKenny

March 2017 Recording Session

STRING SESSION, MARCH 2017 I recently had the opportunity to record here at my studio for a number of upcoming projects.  While I can’t go into detail (yet) on the projects, I thought it would be fun to show you some pictures of our space here in Los Angeles, and a bit of the process. I was recording live strings for two projects.   Here’s a view of the scoring stage from our control booth just prior to recording: My contractor, Nicole Garcia, brought in some amazing players. We started on the first musical cues with a string quintet comprised of 2 Violins, 2 Violas and a Cellist:   Adam Schmidt engineered and mixed the sessions.  One of the most talented people I know and a guy whom I trust will always make my music sound great!  Adam worked for years over at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions and has the experience in making musical cues sound beautiful and epic   Here is a brief sample clip of some of the music I recorded:

RIDESHARE & DARK/WEB

Proud to announce that I recently scored RIDESHARE, an anthology episode for the greater series DARK/WEB.   RIDESHARE was written & directed by Boman Modine, my good friend and talented director whom I’ve worked with before.   The thriller anthology series is the work of visionary producers Michael Nardelli, Mario Miscione, and Tim Nardelli at Felt Films.   The episode is an intensely scary and unsettling look into the future of technology run amok.   I look forward to sharing more about the story and characters when we get closer to air dates……
