WARHAMMER IDENT I scored the company and media production logo “Ident” for Games Workshop’s massive WARHAMMER gaming and science fiction brand. Games Workshop, is a British manufacturer of miniature wargames, based in Nottingham, England. They are a billion dollar market valued company, as well as a top performing member of the FTSE250 index. As a global science fiction and fantasy brand, they have millions of dedicated, passionate fans. I’m one of them. In fact, I’ve been a lifelong fan all things WARHAMMER: their games, their miniatures, their novels, and their incredible world building. Over the years, I’ve become friends with many of the creative geniuses at Games Workshop: sculptors, painters, designers, authors. So it was an incredible honor when Games Workshop asked me to score their new company logo, to be the SOUND of their public identity. This was a massive undertaking, with creative and technical challenges. On the creative side, there was the daunting task of tackling the question of ‘What Is Warhammer?’, as well as the long history of the brand, and trying to distil that into a clear, concise essence. A single musical gesture of just 16 seconds that encapsulates all of it. 40 years of Games[…]
Proud to announce the release of THE CHAPERONE! I composed the original 1920s style songs for this amazing film. Written, directed &produced by the team from DOWNTON ABBEY, starring Haley Lu Richardson and Elizabeth McGovern (whom I had the privilege of working with at the recording sessions). Released in select theaters across the US, and will be featured on PBS as their first original PBS Masterpiece film. The Process.. Composing these songs was a unique opportunity and challenge, to dig into the sound of the 1920s and recreate an authentic feel for the era. I spent about 6 weeks constantly listening to 1920s music and refamiliarizing myself with a lot of material I grew listening to. I composed about a dozen original pieces for the film, and we recorded them at NRG studios in North Hollywood. I had an amazing team, including recording & mix engineer Adam Schmidt, music editor Lisa Arpino, and my music supervisor Andy Ross. We recorded 26 musicians in a variety of band configurations, from small duos to ragtime sextets to full big bands. Elizabeth McGovern attended the sessions, as well as producer Victoria Hill and it a pleasure spending[…]
Incredibly happy to announce the first trailer for THE CHAPERONE, starring Elizabeth McGovern and Haley Lu Richardson. I had the unique pleasure and task of composing the original 1920s songs for this film. Lots of ragtime, vaudeville, big bands… Tremendous Fun! I worked with Elizabeth McGovern, producer Victoria Hill and music supervisor Andy Ross for Michael Engler’s beautifully directed film. Look for it in international release soon, on the BBC, and on PBS as a Masterpiece Film release.
I was approached to compose, arrange, and record a collection of original jazz songs for the upcoming feature film THE CHAPERONE, starring Elizabeth McGovern. It’s a beautiful film, set in the 1920’s, and the project provided an unique opportunity to work in a genre and era you rarely encounter in motion pictures. It was a joy to return to the music of that decade and come up with something that felt authentic and original for the period. I approached the project with the idea of creating the mythical “B Sides” to albums that could have existed. I put together an amazing team, and together we recorded a variety of ensembles, ranging from small dixieland style groups to full big bands to resemble the sound and instrumentation of the era. The all star band included instrumentation like tuba (instead of bass) and banjo (instead of guitar). Recorded over a long day at NRG Studios in Los Angeles, CA. Elizabeth McGovern, star and producer of the film, attended the recordings; it was a real honor and joy to work with her on these songs. THE CHAPERONE Michael Engler, director. Elizabeth McGovern, Victoria Hill, Andrew Mann, Gary Hamilton, Julian Fellowes, producers. Original Songs by Jonathan Hartman.[…]
STRING SESSION, MARCH 2017 I recently had the opportunity to record here at my studio for a number of upcoming projects. While I can’t go into detail (yet) on the projects, I thought it would be fun to show you some pictures of our space here in Los Angeles, and a bit of the process. I was recording live strings for two projects. Here’s a view of the scoring stage from our control booth just prior to recording: My contractor, Nicole Garcia, brought in some amazing players. We started on the first musical cues with a string quintet comprised of 2 Violins, 2 Violas and a Cellist: Adam Schmidt engineered and mixed the sessions. One of the most talented people I know and a guy whom I trust will always make my music sound great! Adam worked for years over at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions and has the experience in making musical cues sound beautiful and epic Here is a brief sample clip of some of the music I recorded:

The Humphrey Bogart Estate’s production company will offer fans the chance to see it early Sep 22, 2014 Fans of Humphrey Bogart-style noir will soon have a few ways to get their movie fix. Anderson, who directed This Last Lonely Place, is calling it an opportunity to link Bogart’s old-world sensibility with new-world distribution opportunities. “We’re excited. It just feels like the right thing to do,” said Anderson. “This film was born from a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, and now we will use Indiegogo in a new way — as a release platform —to bring the film directly to our audience, forgoing the traditional film festival route.” The film, which stars Rhys Coiro (Entourage), Xander Berkeley (24), and Carly Pope (Elysium), was shot in Los Angeles, California.
